Emergency Procedures
Emergency Number
To make a call any of the Emergency Services in Guernsey dial 112 or 999.
General Emergency Situations
Flying should only take place if there is a person on the ground who can assist the pilot, or raise the alarm, in the event of an accident. It is the responsibility of the paragliding pilot to ensure that the emergency services can be contacted in the event of an accident. A pilot may carry a mobile phone in flight, but they should be aware that it may not be possible to contact the emergency services after an accident if;
- they are unconscious,
- they have landed in a location with no mobile signal, or
- they have landed in the sea.
Therefore the ground crew must have a mobile phone with them.
Emergency Landing in the Sea
- Action for the pilot: follow your pilot training, which includes release from the harness before entering the water and do not break, which will allow the wing to pass over you and not on you. Swim away from the paraglider. You may choose to release your harness from the wing to use as a buoyancy device.
- Action for the rescuer: call the Emergency Services, and specify that an inshore rescue craft is required, if appropriate.
Emergency Landing on Cliffs
If a paraglider pilot has made a landing in an area of cliff which is inaccessible, or which is dangerous to access:-
- Action for the pilot: if possible, contact the ground crew verbally or by mobile phone to confirm whether assistance is required.
- Action for the rescuer: do not attempt to assist the pilot if there is a risk of harm to the rescuer. Contact the Emergency Services, and describe whether cliff rescue, sea rescue, or both are required.
In the unlikely event of an incident please read the Reporting an incident page.
