Club Rules
In order to paraglide in the Bailiwick of Guernsey the following prerequisites must be met;
- You must have a minimum qualification of Club Pilot status under the British Handgliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) or the equivalent qualification of another recognised paragliding association.
- Have third party liability insurance for £2 million and agree to provide proof of current cover and annual renewals to Guernsey's Director of Civil Aviation. Cover is provided for you by BHPA if you have a current BHPA licence.
- You must be a member of the Guernsey Paragliding Club which means completing the member registration form or, if you are a visiting pilot, obtain temporary membership by completing the appropriate member registration form.
Once the above prerequisites are met flying is permitted only if you agree to abide by the following rules;
- Pay the annual club membership fee of £20. This requirement is waived for visiting pilots, non-flying and honorary members as appointed by the club.
- You must abide by the BHPA member rules: BHPA Member rules.
- Air Traffic Control (ATC) must be contacted, on 01481-234936, to obtain clearance before flying, giving member name, mobile telephone number and flying location. ATC must be notified if the original contact at the flying site changes, to give a new contact number. ATC must also be notified when flying has finished. If ATC needs to stop flying due to restricted visibility or Air Search, for example, they will probably call from 01481-234903. Members should program this number into their phones to enable easy identification of a call from ATC.
- If you are a visiting pilot or have less than 10 hours flying time you must be accompanied by another club member.
- Flying should only take place if there is a person on the ground who can assist the pilot, or raise the alarm, in the event of an accident. For the full details please read the Emergency Procedures.
- Flying must only take place at designated sites under suitable conditions of tide, wind, weather and visibility. A current Sites Guide can be viewed from this website when you are logged in and your membership has been approved.
- There must be no flying in cloud, or at night.
- The maximum altitude will be 60m above the launch site.
- Public safety is the highest priority at all times. There is no precedence for paragliding or hang gliding over other recreational or commercial activities taking place in the same area.
- There must be no adverse environmental impact, especially to sensitive habitats.
- There must be no flying in the presence of horses.
- Additional restrictions may be periodically applied by La Societe Guernesiase and parochial authorities.
